The actor’s November 2 birthday arrives after Lookingglass named its co-founder producing director, connecting his television fame with his long-running theatre work.

David Schwimmer turns 60 on November 2, a milestone that invites a look beyond Ross Geller. The actor remains closely associated with Friends, but one of the clearest recent developments in his career is happening in Chicago: his new position as producing director of Lookingglass Theatre Company.

That appointment gives this birthday more substance than a familiar collection of sitcom clips. Schwimmer is taking on an ongoing leadership responsibility at the company he helped establish, alongside an ensemble that has been part of his professional life since before Friends made him internationally recognizable.

A new responsibility at a longstanding artistic home

Lookingglass’s current biography identifies Schwimmer as an ensemble member since 1988 and producing director in 2026. It also lists him as a co-founder, placing the theatre near the beginning of his career rather than treating it as a later celebrity project.

WBEZ’s September report on the leadership changes explains what the new job involves: producing, partnerships, fundraising and opportunities for the company’s artists. Ericka Ratcliff and David Catlin were named co-artistic directors, with Philip R. Smith becoming executive director.

Those are distinct responsibilities. Schwimmer’s appointment does not make him the company’s sole artistic leader. Instead, it places a well-known founding member within a broader structure built around the ensemble.

The work beyond Ross Geller

The screen credits are familiar, but their range is easy to overlook. Lookingglass’s biography includes Friends, American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, Band of Brothers, Curb Your Enthusiasm, the Madagascar films and Disney+’s Goosebumps. It records Emmy nominations for both Friends and The People v. O.J. Simpson.

His directing work also moves between media. Theatre credits include adaptations of Studs Terkel’s Race and Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle. Film directing credits include Run Fat Boy Run and Trust. Taken together, that record gives viewers several ways to follow his work without expecting a repetition of one television character.

A birthday with a forward-looking chapter

Birthday coverage published November 2 marks the actor’s 60th. The more interesting career question is what comes with his new institutional role.

A producing position combines the public-facing work audiences recognize with the less visible tasks that help a theatre make and sustain productions. For an actor still instantly identified with a hit sitcom, it is a reminder that a long career can include building opportunities for other performers as well as taking the stage himself.
