The Miners begin 0-1 after the neutral-site opener, with a home debut and a new conference schedule ahead.
UTEP men’s basketball opened the 2026–27 season with an 84–76 loss to Northern Kentucky in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on November 2. The neutral-site game, part of the Field of 68 Opening Day Marathon, leaves the Miners 0–1 as they begin their first season as members of the Mountain West.

UTEP’s official schedule confirms the final score. The eight-point defeat came in a nonconference opener, before the program starts its new league schedule later in the season.
A neutral-site opener before El Paso
The opening game is distinct from UTEP’s home opener. Northern Kentucky’s own schedule announcement confirmed the South Dakota meeting and the free YouTube stream, giving both fan bases a direct way to follow the first day of the season.
UTEP returns to El Paso for a November 8 game against UIW, scheduled for 5 p.m. Mountain at GECU Arena at the Don Haskins Center. That begins a notable year for the venue: the university describes this as the men’s program’s 50th full season in the arena.
The opening loss supplies one competitive reference point. The first home game gives the Miners an opportunity to respond in their own arena. The distinction from conference play matters: the Northern Kentucky result begins the overall record, while Mountain West results will define a separate league race.
What changes in the Mountain West
In its full schedule announcement, UTEP outlined an 18-game conference slate for its first year in the Mountain West. The announcement also identified nationally televised league games as part of the season’s structure.
For fans used to the program’s previous conference schedule, the practical task is to follow the current opponent list and broadcast designation for each date. A conference change affects the rhythm of the winter: recurring opponents, road preparation and the sequence of home games all take on a new shape.
Before that league schedule, the Miners have nonconference events to navigate. The calendar includes the Cancun Challenge on November 24–25 and the 65th annual WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational on December 20–21. Those events give the team additional tests before the conference race becomes the central focus.
Two opening-day basketball programs
November 2 is also an opening date for UTEP’s women. The university’s official coverage page listed a 7 p.m. Mountain home game against Western New Mexico, or 9 p.m. Eastern.
The men’s and women’s games therefore have different opponents, locations and starting times. Readers looking up “UTEP basketball” should check the team designation before choosing a stream or reading a result.
