The Chargers controlled much of the opening half. A late Rams touchdown and another scoring drive after the break changed the game.

The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Chargers 24-9 at SoFi Stadium on Sunday, recovering from a difficult opening to win for the second consecutive week. The Rams moved to 4-4, while the Chargers remained winless at 0-7.

The Rams' official recap recorded the home victory. The Chargers' account identified the minutes around halftime as the turning point in a game that had initially gone in their favor.

A strong start does not become a lead at the break

The Chargers' defense allowed no first downs and just 14 yards across the Rams' first 16 offensive plays. The Chargers led 9-3 late in the second quarter, with a chance to carry both the scoreboard advantage and that defensive performance into halftime.

Instead, Matthew Stafford and the Rams took possession with 1:55 remaining and drove for a touchdown. A 40-yard catch-and-run helped put them in scoring position, and the Chargers went into the break down by a point.

The timing mattered as much as the size of the drive. Los Angeles had spent much of the half limiting the Rams, then lost the lead on the last possession before the interval. Its earlier stops had produced a narrow margin that one touchdown could erase.

The Rams make the next possession count

The Rams received the ball to open the third quarter and put together another touchdown drive, according to the Chargers' report. The score moved to 17-9, changing the pressure on an offense that still needed its first touchdown.

The Chargers finished with nine points and none after halftime. That is the more revealing comparison with their opening defensive work: the Rams found a way to turn an initially unproductive offense into winning points, while the Chargers could not build on their early field goals.

The finish does not erase the quality of the Chargers' first stretch on defense. It does establish how little room that stretch created. Against a Rams team able to score on consecutive possessions around the break, the early advantage needed more support.

For the Rams, reaching .500 after another win provides a different November starting point. For the Chargers, the next review must connect promising individual stretches to the full-game execution that has continued to elude them. Find more coverage in Taken Social's Sports section.
